The Combined Defense Services Examination is conducted by twice a year by the UPSC, for the recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval academy, Indian Air force Academy and Officers training academy.  To apply for this exam, please visit the official site of UPSC by clicking on the link:   You wil be required to register with UPSC before you can apply for the CDS Exam.  The exam is usually conducted in the months of February and November every year and the exact dates are usually announced in October of the previous year and in June, respectively.

You need to be a citizen of India, Nepar or Bhutan and 19 and 25 years of age.  The upper age limit varies depending on which brance of defense services you are applying for, and varies between 22 and 25 years.  You can get more information on the eligibility for the CDS exam on the official website of the Union Public Services Commission.

The question paper pattern for Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Force, and Indian Air force Academy are

  1. English: 100 marks, Duration 2 hours
  2. General Knowledge: 100 marks, 50 minutes
  3. Elementary Mathematics: 100 marks, 2 hours

The question pattern for Officer’s Training Academy:

  1. English: 100 marks, Duration 2 hours
  2. General Knowledge: 100 marks, 50 minutes
